There is a Lemaire strait between the easternmost point of Tierra del Fuego and the Isla des los Estados. That is over 1,000km North of here. Instead, the Lemaire channel runs between the Antarctic peninsula and Booth island.
There was a lot of ice in the channel, and we did not get to go all the way across. We did see a Chilean icebreaker that had crossed the channel, probably on its way to or from supplying an antarctic base.
The sides of the Lemaire channel are very steep and largely covered in ice and glaciers, and host a few penguin colonies.
The Lemaire channel had a beautiful icebergs.
The Lemaire channel was the southernmost point we got to, at about 65 degrees South, so it was a good place for our polar plunge. I went in, and like the others, got out very quickly again. Notice the ice floating in the water in the last two pictures.
After the polar plunge, some people went into the hot tub.
